-Real help doesn't just relieve, it restores.
📕 Helping Without Hurting in Short-Term Missions by Brian Fikkert and Steve Corbett
"One of the biggest mistakes that North American churches make—by far—is in applying relief in situations in which rehabilitation or development is the appropriate intervention."
"Doing things for people that they can do for themselves is paternalism, and it undermines their sense of ownership, their dignity, and their God-given abilities."
Am I helping in a way that empowers or in a way that controls?
- Am I treating this person as a project or a partner?
- Am I preserving the person's dignity, or am I unintentionally damaging it?
- Am I carrying something God asked them to carry?
- Am I offering help that builds capacity, or am I creating dependency?
- Have I taken time to truly listen?
Jesus is not looking for perfect people, he's looking for people who are willing.
